Dog choked/vomited. When do aspiration pneumonia symptoms appear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 4 lbs

How long should I watch out for aspiration pneumonia? Yesterday precious has a reverse sneezing or horrible choking fit - not sure which one. I think she got too excited while eating due to there being whole pieces of food in her induced vomit. I don’t think she inhaled any vomit but I still want to watch out for anything. As of now she’s great. As soon as she woke up she ran around the house & went outside, she’s eating, no coughing, breathing good, etc. Would symptoms appear immediately?

Hello. Yes, aspiration pneumonia would show up immediately with coughing, gagging & a very high respiratory rate. I only mentioned this to you yesterday because of the danger of inducing vomiting in a potentially choking dog. You said that Precious was fine, so I was not worried. Just wanted to caution you about doing this again. So do not worry if she is fine now & I am sorry if I worried you. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hello. I am glad that Precious is doing well, but never induce vomiting in a choking dog. It is very dangerous to do so because she could inadvertently inhale the vomit into her lungs & this will result in aspiration pneumonia. Very nasty & dangerous. I doubt she was choking in the first place. You & she are very lucky. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
