Why is my hamster's belly suddenly big and she's gaining weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed

Margo has gained weight very fast. She is eating more than usual and drink same as normal. I don’t see a difference in her using her litter. I think it’s just because it’s getting cold but I don’t want to assume. Most the weight is in her lower half.

Thanks for reaching out about Margo and including pictures. The distention of the abdominal cavity is not a normal process. Abdominal size increases can be caused by fluid build up called ascites (liver, renal, heart diseases) or an organ enlargement. Kidney enlargement due to polycystic renal disease or cancer is not unusual in hamsters. A veterinary visit is recommended for diagnosis and treatment, quality of life can be improved. Good luck.
