My dog has a swollen bump on her eyelid. When should I call a vet?

Hello! My dog recently got this bump on her eyelid and it’s swelled within the last couple of days. I haven’t been able to take her to the vet until pay day so I’m here in the meantime. It doesn’t seem to bug her. Any ideas what it could be?

It is hard to tell without a biopsy or a needle sample for examination under a microscope. That is probably what your vet will do when you take Peanut in. Sometimes masses that look like this are viral papillomas or benign skin growths, other times they can be aggressive soft tissue tumors. You can never say 100% without some diagnostic testing.

    The mass on her eyelid is most likely an eyelid adenoma which is a benign mass. Since it is growing, it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at it and possibly remove the mass before it gets any bigger. The lesion on her gum could be an epilus and it would also be a good idea to have your vet take a look at it to determine if it needs to be removed.

I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian soon.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established. Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors. My miniature schnauzer has a bump on her top eyelid. Its is about half a pea size. It is brown in color. It does not seem to hurt her, and her eye is not red. She does not scratch it either. I am wondering what it could be.
This may be a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. A cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

My dog had entropion surgery a few years ago and now he has a hard bump on the outside of his lower eyelid. Do we need to get this checked? It doesn’t seem to bother him but it has grown a little over the last year from the first time I noticed it.
Hello. The bump on the picture looks like either a growth/tumor or a cyst. Many of these are benign but it is recommended that you have your veterinarian look at it in person to advise you if this should be surgically removed. Please can I be advise d about the lump in my dogs eye
Most eyelid masses in dogs are benign Meibomian gland adenomas that do not typically cause any major problems. However, if Max's eyelid mass is growing rapidly, bleeding, or causing irritation to the eye (such as squinting or discharge), it would be best to have the mass surgically removed. If you have further concerns, Max should go to his vet for evaluation. I hope this helps!

I found a pink small bump under my Malteses eye. What do I do?
Unfortunately, without physically touching the lesion and probably doing some diagnostic testing, it is really difficult to say what it may or may not be. Unknown lumps are usually one of the following: bug bites, masses, abscesses, tumors, or cystic structures. Needle aspiration will typically provide a great deal of information and lead us to the presumptive diagnosis. If it has any sort of communication with the eyelid, then it is most likely a benign mass known as a Meibomian Adenoma. These are not typically problematic unless they are touching the eye's surface. If it remains the same size and no other problems are noted, you don't necessarily have to do anything at this time. However, if it starts to become bothersome I would get it checked out some time. Without a picture or examining Laila it's difficult to say what is going on for sure. Dogs can get small tumors on their eyelids called meibomian gland tumors and normally these are benign. However, I'm a little concerned that it has gotten larger overnight. It could also be an area of infection or a more serious tumor type. If you can post a picture of Laila it may be helpful to give you further advice. If not, it would be best to err on the side of caution and have Laila examined by your veterinarian. My dog daisja has developed a bump on the outside lower corner of her eye. It's almost blistery looking.
This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. My dog has a swollen upper eye lid (very small swell) is there anything i can do or should i take her to the vet.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco. A picture might be helpful in getting you a more accurate response. If it looks like a single lump on the very edge of the eyelid, it could be a benign eyelid cyst or beingn tumor. These we often leave alone unless they bother the surface of the eye or they are getting large. If it is not very defined swelling (just a general “puffiness”) it could be the beginnings of an allergic reaction, bug bite, etc. You can try some Benedryl just in case but if the swelling gets worse throughout the day, or you see any other signs of allergic reaction (vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, hives), you need to head to the vet right Immediately as severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening. Hello. It is important to have a veterinarian examine this in person, but it looks like a growth or cyst originating from the Meibomian glands - which are glands that help tear production. These growths and cysts are usually benign but can become infected, rupture open or irritate the surface of the cornea if they get big enough. Even if your veterinarian diagnoses this as a non-cancerous growth or a cyst, it may still require surgical removal at some point. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.
