My dog is bleeding a week after spay. Is human Tranexamic safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old

My dog started to bleed from her vagina one week after being spayed. I took her to the vet and they did not test blood or urine, instead, they prescribed her human Tranexamic. Should I be concerned?

There can sometimes be some bleeding 7-14 days after being spayed as the sutures start to dissolve in the body. Most of the time this resolves with any treatment necessary. If you continue to see blood coming from the vulva for several days in a row (or if there are additional symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, etc), it would warrant an examination and blood work. I have never heard of using Tranexamic in dogs, so I can't comment on that medication.
