Why is my dog chewing his discolored legs and has gunky eyes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | 7 years and 7 months old

My dog is a maltese/poodle and about 6 yrs. old. He was a rescue from PetCo. We are not active people being in our 70's and have med. conditions but he sometimes gets a run but usually a mild walk. He has been chewing at his front legs to where they are discolored. At his last grooming his eyes became irritated from the eyebrows being shaved too close and he kept rubbing them so I washed them with a boric acid solution made for humans. They seem better but still have the hard gunk on the edges.

There could be an allergic component at work that is responsible for all of Mutton's symptoms. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further chewing of his legs or rubbing at his eyes. This may be enough to allow for healing. Ideally, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. The eyes can be stained to diagnose corneal injury. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use with your veterinarian. Allergies can be frustrating to diagnose since they have many causes, but if you can identify the underlying cause(s), management becomes much easier.
