My senior Pomeranian suddenly won't use pee pads. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

I have a 15 year old Pomeranian who has always used training pads to urinate on while we weren't home his entire life. He hasn't used it in the last day or so and will only urinate outside (which is fine) but it was a sudden change in his pattern and that has me concerned. Any ideas?

I can't think of anything wrong with what he is doing. Is it possible that it is harder for him to squat on the pee pad inside? Maybe it shifts around or is in a tight location? As dogs age, they can develop arthritis that makes it uncomfortable to posture to urinate and defecate and sometimes you see these changes. It may be a good idea to have him checked over by a vet.
