My dog has a brown spot, limps, and smells bad. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 8.5 lbs

My dog has developed this brown spot underneath his arm. He limps when he walks and I am not sure if it connected, but he also has a very pungent odor coming from him when he has not smelled like this before. I am worried because I was hoping it would go away but he seems to get worse. I am not sure what this is or if I should be very concerned.

I would recommend that you have Cookie examined by a vet. The browning of the hair is often caused by increased licking (the saliva turns the hair a rusty brown color). It can be caused by pain or itching. The limping may or may not be related, but the vet can look into it. An odor could be caused by a yeast infection or anal glands or something else. Your vet should be able to put things together!
