My dog is whining non-stop after spay surgery. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 40 lbs

I had my dog spayed yesterday, and was given carprofen. I understand she’s in discomfort as it’s normal after surgery but she has been whining pretty much non stop since after yesterday. I’m worried about her and unsure if this much whining is abnormal

I recommend a phone call to your veterinarian to ask about additional pain medications. Some dogs are more sensitive than others. My own puppy needed a second prescription medication to make him more comfortable. Although most dogs do fine with just carprofen, it might not be enough for Bella. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, or concerning, but we don't want her to be painful.
