Dog's neuter site unhealed, acting weird after cone removal. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 18 lbs

He was neutered on 10/22/18 and I took off his cone two weeks after being neutered which is what they told me to do. Today he began to act very weird, barking loud, whining for everything, etc. Which is way out of his character, he’s usually very quiet, gets along with other animals, barley barks, etc. I looked at his nueter site and it’s not healed. I provided a picture, please let me know what I can do about this. Thanks.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At this point this looks very superficial. If he does not lick or scratch at it, this will likely heal on its own at this point. I would put the e-collar back on until this heals completely. Good luck!

Toffee’s incision is healing beautifully! I generally recommend keeping the e-collar on for 10-14 days after surgery. Even though his incision looks fantastic, it can be pretty itchy as the hair regrows. It would be a shame if Toffee licked a lot from this itchiness and delayed his healing progress. I would keep using the cone for a few more days out of an abundance of caution.
