My old dog fell off the bed and is swallowing hard. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 15 years and 4 months old | 4 lbs

She was sleeping on my bed, I left to do some chores, checked on her, still sleeping, left to finish up to find her wandering on the floor. She has bad legs from age so I know she must have fell/not jumped off. I picked her up and she seemed like she was swallowing hard/trying to swallow. I gave her some water, drank normal and wandered a lil more and now resting by me. She seems fine but wonder if the hard swallowing was thirst or could she have hit her throat on a ledge-ish my bed has

Even if Mel hit her throat I would not think there would be any serious trauma if she is now resting comfortably. You should monitor her for any limping or signs of neck or back pain, but if she continues to act normal I wouldn’t worry about the fall. You may want to look into getting a ramp or steps to your bed.
