My dog has a red lump on his eyelid. Is it a recurring cyst?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old

What's on my dog's eyelid? He's had a lump for a few months, and last year he had a cyst surgically removed. For a while I thought this lump was just scar tissue from the surgery (it was brown colored and smaller), but today it started to look red and pimple-like. Is this another cyst, or something more serious? Why does my dog keep getting these lumps on his eyelid?

This looks like an infected eye lid cyst. It should heal and get smaller in a week or two. If not then bring him in for an exam and topical medication to treat this. Many dogs get eyelid cysts and benign tumors. As long as they are not causing eye irritation they can be left alone. If they get large and bother the dog then I recommend surgical removal. There is no reason that I know of why some dogs get these and others don’t. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sawyer.
