Should I shave my dog's fur to remove fleas from his thick coat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 75 lbs

Is it okay to shave, with an electric shaver, a small part of my dog's fur of off his lower back (by the tail)? He has a lot of fleas in that area and it is very difficult to remove them from his thick, black fur. I want him to be relieved of any pain ASAP and shaving (followed by cleaning) seems to be the most efficient and effective method. He is half Lab, so his coat is like a Labrador's.

An electric shaver is safe, but removing hair in one area of a dog won't help you get rid of the fleas. I promise, they are all over him! Chase needs to be on a good quality monthly flea preventative. Bathing will help remove fleas that are currently on him, but it won't prevent new ones from hatching in days or weeks. Bathing will also decrease the efficacy of topical flea preventatives. I would recommend having Chase examined by a vet so he can be started on an oral flea preventative. It may take up to 3 months to completely rid your house of fleas.
