My dog's paw pad is red with a hard black growth. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 2 years and 2 months old | 40 lbs

About two months ago I noticed my dog’s paw pad looking red and irritated. I figured it was just a little irritation and nothing to worry about. About a month later (left photo), I noticed a small, hard black growth on the paw pad. I took her to vet and was told to watch it for a few weeks. A few weeks later, the photo on the right is what it looks like today. Have you seen anything like this before? I’m concerned.

This looks like a corn to me. They are common in greyhounds. I would have this checked again and they may want to sedate her and remove some of this and do a biopsy to be sure. Usually corns are removed or trimmed down so they they don’t affect their walking or cause discomfort. Since this is changing I would pursue a diagnosis before it gets bigger.
