Why is my dachshund tilting her head, rubbing face, and snorting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

Recent ongoing issue with female dachshund, 8 yrs. 3 weeks ago she had a bladder infection and was given antibiotics and metacam. Finished meds. 1 week later she presented with a rubbing her face on one side, bit of a head tilt and scratching and licking at her nose. Also has tear discharge in one eye. She recently (2mos ago) had her teeth cleaned. She has a bit of a nasally/raspy sound breathing. X-rays don't show lung infection. Bloodwork including clotting looks fine. Ears look fine.

I am sorry to hear about Kitty! That sounds like a frustrating situation. It may be time for some advanced diagnostics if Kitty is not improving. We would be worrying about things like a tooth root abscess (not always visible to he naked eye while looking into the mouth), an inner ear infection, or a mass in the nasal passages/skull. The next steps could include things like dental x-rays, skull x-rays, or CT, as well as bloodwork to check for changes in white blood cell numbers which could indicate infection.
