My dog only plays with his old ball. How can I introduce new toys?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 140 lbs

This is Dexter, my gorgeous 7 year old rescued hound, & his 4 year old ball. He loves his ball & can find it anywhere we hide it in the house or yard. 2nd picture is his new ball. It squeaks like his old ball & smells like bacon. He seemed to like new ball & we played inside for a couple hours off & on. When I took him outside & threw it he ran to the ball sniffed it &walked away. The only ball he brings is the old one. What should I do? Thanx. Carolyn.

Sometimes dog just like their old worn out toys, just like with kids. If he doesn't want to play with the new one and only wants the old one then let him play with the one he likes. The only reason I would take it away is if it will harm him. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
