Why isn't my newly adopted cat eating, drinking, or using litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

We adopted a 6 yr old cat Sunday afternoon and he hasn't eaten, drunken, or went to the bathroom since. It was a very stressful adoption since he had to be split up with his twin brother, so we've tried to be patient and keep him in one room with the door closed since. We've tried very hard to limit how much we've bothered him since, but it's a smallish apartment. We've left plenty of food and water out for him. It's the same brand he ate before and we included wet food as well.

It's actually quite serious that Tigger isn't eating. When cats go for 72 hours without eating, they develop a fatty liver. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment. While it could be he is stressed from the move to his new home, it could be a medical illness causing him to not eat. He should see a vet immediately for a health check to prevent him from developing a fatty liver. Best of luck.
