My dog has a red spot on his nose that just appeared. What is it?

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could just be an area Morty traumatizes repeatedly. This may be especially true if he is an avid digger or in a kennel or crate he sticks his nose through or tries to bite the bars of. It could also be a little skin infection, allergic type reaction, or (much less likely) an auto immune condition. I would watch his behaviors closely to see if you can explain why that’s happening. The red spot could be due to a skin infection, benign or malignant mass, granuloma, among others. You should take your dog to her vet for an exam to evaluate the lesion. A fine needle aspirate or skin cytology may be indicated to microscopically determine the underlying cause of this lesion so that it can be managed appropriately.

Without seeing the spot, it is hard to know the cause. It could be an infection, cyst, mass, etc. If it is not bothering him then you could monitor and see if it resolves or changes in any way. You could also have him examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine if any treatment is needed.

Without actually seeing the lesions, it is hard to diagnose but she could have a skin infection, ringworm, allergic reaction, mites, or an autoimmune disease. Have your vet take a look at the lesions to determine the cause and best way to treat. She may need antibiotic, antihistamine, corticosteroid, or other medications to help.

So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. Ideally I would do a prep on a slide and look under the microscope to see if there is a significant bacterial or yeast population. Regardless, however, I think she would benefit from some topical treatment depending on what is seen under the microscope. If it seems to be spreading, and the area is swollen, some injectable or oral medications may be indicated.

Ouch! Any new or suddenly growing growth like this should be checked out by your vet in person ASAP. Allergies, infections, skin irritation from rubbing it on things, and some growths and tumors can all cause spots like that on the nose, and can also cause rapid changes and discoloration like this. Until you can get to your vet, I would place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Amber and keep the spot clean and dry to help reduce any further irritation. It is also a good idea to monitor the size and shape of it and how rapidly it is changing as this can help your vet figure out what may be going on. Your vet will likely take a full history as well as a potential sample of the spot to see what cells are present and provide treatment as needed.

The lesion you are describing and visible in the pictures could include many different diseases, for example: a trauma, a localized bacterial infection, a fungal infection and, even if very unlikely, a neoplastic skin disease (i.e. nasal lymphoma). Discoid lupus erythematous cannot be excluded at this and the presentation might be compatible. Each of these diseases has a different treatment .Generally speaking, I would suggest to keep the area clean with some saline (if cupid dirts his nose while sniffing in the garden) and avoid scratching and licking from other dogs. I wouldn't use any cream and, as you already anticipated, I would suggest a check up with your local veterinarian. Hopefully is just a trauma and will resolve quickly but, the final diagnosis is reached by taking a biopsy of skin from the affected area. A red patch on the snout could be due to several things. If your dog is prone to digging with his snout, especially if he has spent time in a crate recently, he may have rubbed a raw spot on his nose. Other possible causes of a red patch of skin in this area would be allergies, bacterial or fungal infections, skin mites (especially Demodex mites, or demodectic mange) or even some auto-immune skin diseases. If the spot does not resolve within a few days or if it seems to be spreading, I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - he/she can do some simple tests, such as a skin scrape, to determine the problem.

This may be local irritation or infection. if it isn't bothering Timberlynn, you can monitor it at home for rapid change or growth, spread, bleeding or discharge. See your vet if the spot causes discomfort or develops any of the listed symptoms. A fine needle aspirate or biopsy may be done to collect samples for pathology which could provide a diagnosis. Treatment will depend on the final diagnosis.

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or be fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
