Docked puppy tail bone exposed: Is it healing or needs more vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

Hello. Is this tail ever going to heal properly? Will skin cover it to the point where it looks normal? Or is it not going to heal properly? And look bad? Took all of my puppies to vet yesterday to get them checked again.ONE has bone exposure..if I would have known that something like this can happen, I would have never done it! Unless they did a bad job docking the tails? Anyways, all they gave me was silvadene cream telling me to apply a thin layer 2-3 times daily. Is this really going to help?

This does not look correct and in my opinion this needs to be re-operated on, i.e. the skin around the bone needs to be mobilised, freshened and stretched and sutured over the bone, or, if the bone protrudes too much, that last tail vertebra needs to be removed and the skin and tissue freshened up and sutured. This may heal by second intention ( by putting ointment on it ), but there is also a chance that it will not and that the bone will stay exposed, or that infection sets in.
