Why is my new dog crying, sore, struggling to stand, and has diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 75 lbs

I adopted Alfa friday. His previous owner said no health issues. The past 3 days he is having trouble standing up. He cries loudly and whimpers trying to get up. It's getting worse. He is sore to touch if you lightly pat him after and he cries. It seems to be worse at the end of his spine near his tail and hips. I asked his prior owner again and he thinks it's because he wasn't able to walk him before and maybe his body is sore. He also has bad flatulence and soft and runny stools.

This sounds like he has bad back or hip pain. He needs veterinary attention right away. They will prescribe pain medication and may do X-rays to determine if he has hip or spinal arthritis. With treatment he should improve if he was fine before. Sometimes back or arthritis pain is worse after a lot of activity, or from being confined and not being able to move around.
