My dog ate chicken bones, now vomiting. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 80 lbs

Two days ago my golden retriever at dinner chicken bones from the garbage. He only ate one maybe two. Today I came home to vomit on the floor. He ate his dinner fine tonight and is drinking plenty of fluids. Is this most likely related to the chicken bone? How long should I wait before taking him in?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can certainly be due to the chicken bones. It could be due to dietary indiscretion or even more concerning due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. The fact that Bailey ate dinner and did not vomit makes me think that it is less likely for this to be an obstruction though if the vomiting resumes or he stops eating, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!
