Why is my female zebra finch going bald and not laying eggs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Finch | Female | unspayed | 0 lbs

I have 2 healthy bonded male/female zebra finches approximately 8-10 months old. Everything is proper in their cage with 2 hanging toys and bone. They eat a finch seed food and fresh water. The female though began going bald soon after purchase exposing her back of neck and most of her back. They seem healthy and happy regardless. Very bonded. What can I do to help her? And is it normal that she has not yet laid an egg? Please help.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The signs you describe are consistent with over grooming, likely from the other bird. This may be due to boredom or overly dominant nature of the cage mate. You can try to provide additional toys and perches in the cage, keep the light cycle in the room stable, and provide a nesting box. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!
