How to stop my kitten's obsessive nursing on me and himself?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered

I've had my rescue kitten for a few months now. He is approximately 4 mo old. At night, he is obsessive with trying to nurse on me. I try to divert his attention, but it doesn't work. I tell him no and move him towards the bottom of the bed. At that point, he nurses on himself, his privates. I bought a small baby blanket with satin trim, hoping he would suck on that. It's not working....any advice on how to curb this?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Finn! This can be a common issue in kittens especially if they were weaned early. You are doing the right thing in moving him away from you when he decides to suckle on your skin. Just gently place him away from you when this occurs. If he is then nursing on himself, you may need to put a little onesie on him to prevent access to his hind end at night time if he is doing it enough to cause irritation to the skin while you sleep, and if you see him do it while you are awake, pick him up and try to engage him in a toy or other distraction.
