Pale lines on dog skin: Are they stretch marks or from rough play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 30 lbs

Does my dog have stretch marks? I don’t know what else these could be unless he’s been playing too rough with my other dog. They’ve turned up only since last week. I’ve attached a photo.

I see the paler lines of skin that you are speaking of. I also see some scabs and reddish areas there which makes me suspect that these paler areas are scars from healing scratches on the skin due to the rough play you mentioned. Dogs really don’t get stretch marks, so this would be the most logical explanation for lesions like this on the skin. These other areas seem to be healing well on their own, so no need to treat this for now. Continue to monitor Sarge’s skin to ensure it heals well. Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best of luck moving forward with your pet Sarge.
