Is it normal for my kitten to vomit roundworms after deworming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

My kitten has roundworms. She was given a cerenia injection a Nemex/strongid t-dispensed and A/D canine/feline can . I was told she would poop the roundworms and I'd see them in the litter. She isnt eating alot and drinks water. She is urinating and pooping but I haven't seen any in her feces. But I guess she is still feeling nauseous because as I was taking her to the litter and she threw up everywhere in it and I seen some again. Is it normal for her 2 throw them up not poop them out?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, Piggy is very cute, I am sorry she isn't feeling well. Animals with high burdens (large numbers) of worms can both vomit and poop out the worms and this can be normal. The concerning part of this for Piggy is that she was given a very strong medication to stop vomiting, and is vomiting anyways. This might be a sign that she has such a large number of worms that they might be causing a blockage in her intestines so that they cannot flow through. I recommend monitoring Piggy very carefully. If she continues to vomit, isn't eating, isn't pooping at all, or if she seems weak, tired, sore or bloated in her abdomen/stomach, then I would get her to a vet right away for x-rays as she might need surgery. Another possible but less likely condition is called an intussusception (where the intestines 'telescope' inside itself and cause death to that part of the intestine) and will cause the same signs as above, and requires surgery to fix. These conditions are unlikely to happen but important to watch for. If she is otherwise eating and keeping some food down, pooping, playing and acting normally, then just continue to monitor her and you will likely see the worms coming through her poop soon. Best of luck with Piggy!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She likely vomited due to the worms however there are other possible reasons. The first thing is determining the specific type of worm that is affecting her so that therapy can be recommended based on that. Walmart does not have any available safe therapy to be used for undiagnosed worms causing vomiting. I recommend you visit a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to diagnose the specific cause of the vomiting and recommend accordingly. Best of luck!

It sounds like poor Piggy is sick, and it could be due to the worms, a GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. When a kitten is vomiting a lot, is dehydrated, and feels like it has a fever, this is a medical emergency that requires immediate vet care. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.
