Is my active dog's occasional three-breath pattern normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 39 lbs

Is my dog breathing normally? Sometimes He breaths three times, like breath breath breath exhale. But not everytime, is not very fast. His gums are red, his nostrils are not flaring. He is active, playing, running as usual, eating fine...just the occasional breathing pattern

Hello, thank you for your question. This may be a normal breathing pattern for Keanu. If he doesn’t look distressed and is breathing with normal rate and effort I think this is unlikely to be a problem. I would recommend continuing to monitor Keanu and keeping an eye on this pattern for any progression or worsening. If at any time Keanu looks distressed or is having a lot of effort to his breathing I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
