Why is my spayed dog having bloody discharge and lactating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

My dog was spayed on October 31 and her incision looks great. No blood or swelling. I just noticed that she has some bloody discharge that is fresh from her vulva. Is this normal? She also started lactating a few days ago.

That is unusual. This may be from spaying her when in heat, and the discharge is just coming out. The hormones also can take up to six weeks to go down so she may be having a false pregnancy even though she’s been spayed. I would watch her closely. These symptoms should resolve over the next few weeks. If the bleeding continues that is not normal and could indicate a problem with the internal incision. If she stops eating, or becomes lethargic then please bring her right in for a recheck. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Cleo.

If she was in a false pregnancy or pregnant during the procedure then this can cause them to lactate still. The ovaries and uterus were removed, but the hormones that were already produced and circulating take a week or 2 to fully go away, so her body will still respond as if everything is still there. It should go away with in 2 weeks. If not, or you notice a pus discharge, then I would get her rechecked
