My shy stray cat's eyes shake. What causes this and should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

I got my cat at the humane society about two months ago she was a start before that. I just noticed that when she stares at you it’s very slight but both eyes shake back and forth. It’s small but noticeable after a few seconds of watching. What is this and how can I help? There’s no way she would let me go into a vet with her she is very shy and skiddish from being a stray. Help?

This is called nystagmus. Some Asian breeds of cats have a congenital nystagmus, which is not concerning. They can still see very well and act and feel normal and healthy. However, nystagmus can also be a sign of a brain lesion. Should your kitty act funny, or not feel good, have problems walking, eating, drinking or appear ill, take her to your vet for an exam and mention the nystagmus. But if she acts normal, then there is likely no problem.
