Why is my German Shepherd puppy suddenly limping and grunting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 7 days old | 65 lbs

9 month old German Shepherd recently woke up in the middle of the night yelling and holding paw up in air. She was fine a couple minutes later and we wrote it off as a cramp of some sort. She has since not been able to get comfortable, exhibiting signs of discomfort in the same leg, but also being very vocal with her “grunting” as she moves from one position to another every couple of minutes. This is her front, right leg. I have applied pressure all along the entire leg without reaction.

Keep an eye on Nyx. If she continues to be uncomfortable tomorrow, I would have her examined by her vet. It could be "growing pains" or something like panosteitis, an inflamed nerve, a sprain, etc. Try to limit activity today (only walking outside on a leash, limited jumping or running). Also, look very closely around each paw pad and between her toes for any punctures, dried mud, or objects stuck in the fur.
