My cat has throat pain, can't swallow, and pale gums. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi,my cat has strong pain in the throat and can't swallow anything, I started give him Clavamox yesterday, but today when I tried to feed him with Royal Canin recovery paste,he couldn't swallow even it, I only could make him swallow very little Royal Canin baby granules but he's very hungry and his tongue, gums and nose are white, his tongue even turn near blue before eating and recovers color after I feed him,is anything safe which I can give him to reduce the pain and make him swallow, thank you.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat, that sounds awful. I would discuss additional treatment options with your vet. It sounds like he may need a feeding tube placed. There are different types of feeding tubes, some can be placed with a very minor surgical procedure through the side of the neck into the esophagus, allowing easy feeding while bypassing the oral cavity/throat. It sounds like he may also need a sedated exam to look in his throat/oral cavity and do imaging such as x-ray or ultrasound to determine what is causing this. I don't think the pain is causing the color changes but likely some physical abnormality.
