Why is my older dog suddenly peeing inside, even after a negative urine test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 32 lbs

For about a month my dog has been peeing on the floor. It is about every 3 days. She also went pee in our bed where she sleeps 3 times. I do not think she knows that she is doing it. She also went to move off the couch and she had peed too. She has never done this. I checked her urine and it came back (-). She still plays, eats and poops normal. We did get a new dog in June but this has only been going on for a month. Sometimes she will go right after we let her out but only when we are gone.

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in older spayed female dogs. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to control this. I’m glad you’ve checked her urine and since it was negative then starting her on medication for incontinence is the next step. I usually start with Proin, and they can add another medication if that isn’t effective. These are prescription medications so you’ll need to talk with your veterinarian about trying one.
