Why is my senior German Shepherd's poop foul, loose, and watery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 11 years and 9 months old | 90 lbs

Hi- my 11 year old GSD has very foul smelling poop all the time. Often loose and watery. It sticks to her and gets all over our home. Good mobility. No apparent back / hip issues but our vet wants to refer to a neurosurgeon. We can't afford it. She's has the problem a year but it's worsening. Any ideas? Thanks so much!!

This sounds more like a gastrointestinal problem to me. I recommend switching to a bland diet like Hills prescription i/d or sensitive stomach. Check a fecal also for parasites. GSD also get pancreatic insufficiency that can have similar symptoms and that is treated with an enzyme supplement. I recommend a second opinion with another veterinarian before consulting a neurosurgeon. In the meantime if you apply a thin film of Vaseline to the fur around the rectum and down the legs the diarrhea won’t stick to the fur and she will stay cleaner. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Kelly.
