My dog pees inside. Is it her thyroid meds or anal gland issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old | 43 lbs

Hi my dog is over weight beagle on thyroid medication. I took her to her vet Thursday. Had check up anal glands and nails done. I wasn't really paying attention until today. My dog is peeing without realizing it then trying to peel outside but nothing coming out cause already peed in house. Could having her glands done mess up her bladder? Thank you

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hypothyroidism can lead to drinking and peeing more frequently, as well as a higher likelihood to have a urinary tract infection, and can also lead to neurological disorders. Likely the peeing inappropriately and peeing when nothing is coming out is a problem associated with her hypothyroidism and not associated with having her anal glands expressed. Anal glands and the bladder are not anatomically related, and these would not be associated with one another. I do recommend you bring her in to have her urine checked though. Best of luck with Annabelle, I hope she feels better soon!
