Why does my dog cough after eating or excitement, besides heartworms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 26 days old | 55 lbs

Scooby will occasionally have a cough that reminds me of a heart worm cough (he’s going to get heart worm tested soon) I’ve only really noticed the cough after he eats or when he gets too hyper. Could there be a different cause besides heart worms? He is up to date in all his vaccines

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Besides being due to heartworms, coughing can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Scooby evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck and have a good night!
