My dog shakes head & scratches ears after flea treatment. Still fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | unneutered | 15 years and 2 months old

I used Frontline spot on 4 weeks ago on my small dog because he had fleas. For some reason it didn't work. I applied 3 days ago the Advantage spot on and he is still shaking his head and scratching his ears. Is that possible that this treatment doesn't work either and he still has fleas?

If Bruno is scratching his ears and shaking his head it does not point to flea infestation but rather an ear infection with either mites, bacteria or a fungus. You will need to take Bruno to your veterinarian for an ear exam and then treatment for the cause of the itch and shake. Treatment will depend on the cause (acaricide for mites, antibiotic for bacterial infection, fungicide for fungal infection )
