Adopted dog coughing, sneezing, mucus. Is it kennel cough? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 40 lbs

I’ve adopted a 1 year old golden retriever mix from a shelter a few days ago and immediately noticed a cough and Some nasal mucus . I’m thinking kennel cough but not for sure because she also sneezes and sometimes projects a clear to light green or milky mucus. She doesn’t show signs of loss of appetite and for the most part has energy (still getting to know her). I’m wondering if a trip to the vet is the needed next step?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would agree with you that this could be something like kennel cough. This is something that most dogs when supported can get through. I would recommend you have Khali evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat accordingly. Antibiotics are usually prescribed as part of the treatment protocol. Good luck and have a great day!
