My new puppy was spayed. Is a swollen belly normal after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 months and 8 days old | 12 lbs

hi - we adopted a puppy last Sunday and she was spayed. It looks like one of her uterine horns is swollen.. (I googled and this is what it looks like from picture of anatomy) I don't have a picture here and I don't have her medical info so I have no local vet yet. Is this normal?? I hope so... and also what role does the rescue usually play if this is an issue.. thank you so much! Joanne

It is likely that your puppy had an ovariohysterectomy, which is the removal of both ovaries and both uterine horns plus the uterine body. So there is likely no swollen uterine horn present. Also, you would not be able to see that from the outside when you look at your dog. That said, if you think your puppy's abdomen is excessively swollen and /or if your puppy appears ill you should take her to a veterinarian for an exam. You may want to call the shelter and find out whether Athena had an ovarectomy or ovariohysterectomy and whether you should take her back there for an exam.
