Dog's puncture wound is red, swollen, scratching, and panting. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 25 lbs

Tuesday evening my dog ran into the corner of a trailer and got a bad punture wound, I cleaned him up and took him to the vet clinic where they shaved around it to keep his fur away from it and gave me antibiotics for him, right now the area is red and swollen and he keeps scratching at the area and panting, is there anything I can do to help him?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bolt. You will need to stop him from scratching the wound. He can wear an E-collar if the wound is near his face. A tshirt may be useful if it is on his body. I would contact his veterinarian today as panting can be a sign of pain. He may require adjustments or additional pain medications. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
