My dog has pus-like discharge from her private area. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has been having this mucus/pus coming out of her “lady” area. At first I thought she just had diarrhea but the smell and look of it didn’t add up. She finally let me pick up her back legs to take a look and I’m not really sure what I should do. It’s only been going on for 1 day.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You need to take Brooke to your vet right away. This is a condition called 'pyometra' which is a pus filled uterus. She can get very very sick very quickly, and this condition almost always requires surgery to prevent a fatal infection that spreads through the body. I would recommend a visit to the emergency clinic if your vet is closed, even if you don't have the surgery done right away (recommended), you should get her started on fluids and antibiotics with view to do the surgery as soon as possible. This is a very very serious condition that needs attention. Best of luck with Brooke, I hope she feels better soon!
