Why is my dog destructive, anxious, and misbehaving after walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 85 lbs

My very stubborn dog gets a long 45 min- 1 hours walk every day around 4:00pm and plays plenty of fetch throughout the day, but in the evening he's not tired at all, he trys to destroy things, trys to be dominant over my older brothers by jumping on them and trying to nip/bite and just overall misbehaves. He's not fixed and does suffer from anxiety issues. What can I do to help eliminate this problem and what is causing it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You’ve already named a few of the problems. Neutering probably won’t help the energy level but may help with the dominance actions. Anxiety is huge and often requires anti-anxiety medication and always requires some form of training. In some instances, training will not be effective until you start some sort of medication so I recommend speaking to your vet. Finally, even though you do much more than many owners in terms of exercise (great work!), it still may not be enough for Stitch, depending on his breed and demeanor. Consider dog parks (once neutered), having him run along a bicycle, etc. Finally, give it time. Many breeds do not settle down until 2-3 years of age, but most eventually do settle down. Best wishes to you and Stitch!
