Why is my cat hiding, lethargic, and has diarrhea after food switch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 7 days old

My cat is around 7 months old and is extremely sociable and playful. Since yesterday morning, he's been hiding under our living room table, lethargic and unsociable, will not play with toys. This evening I found what I think is poop on the carpet near his litter box. I can even see undigested pieces of cat food in it. Looks pasty and much lighter than usual, also a very large amount. He is feeling bonier. When younger he'd vomit everything but cat food. Switched cat food this Sat. Help!

I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian tomorrow. It sounds like Fighter may have a gastrointestinal upset from the switching of his food. Your veterinarian can perform a good physical examination and provide medication to help FIghter feel better. If Fighter continues to vomit or there is any blood then I recommend a veterinarian tonight. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
