My German Shepherd gets diarrhea from dog food. How to fix it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 3 years and 9 months old | 40 lbs

My German Shepard continues to have an upset stomach. We have taken her off regular dog food (purina lamb and rice) and put her on ground beef and rice. This helped. We added dog food gradually back and it was ok, but when we went to straight dog food with no rice or ground beef added. She began to have diarea again. What do we need to do?

It is possible that Chloe is having an adverse food reaction and might not be tolerating the Purina Lamb and Rice. I recommend having your veterinarian check a sample of her diarrhea to make sure no parasites are present, but if everything looks okay, you might consider a prescription hypoallergenic diet trial. If that doesn't help, German Shepherds are known to occasionally have some chronic diarrhea that can be due to enzyme deficiencies, so further testing might be warranted. Hopefully a simple food change might be enough.
