My German Shepherd has a long bald spot on his back. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male

My German shepherd has a long bald spot on his back, we got him about a month ago and the breeder says it was caused when he got into a fight with another dog, I’m not sure what to believe because of how the spot looks but just to be safe I wanted to get some professional advice on what it may be and how to fix it

It is a little hard to tell based on these photos, and a closer look in person might make a difference, but this could definitely be a scar. If it is a scar, I'd hate to see what the original injury looked like! A veterinarian could take a closer look at the tissue, hair follicles, and how it feels, and make a better assessment on whether it appears to be a scar or diseased skin.
