My cat was chased by a stray. Will he come home if the stray is gone?

My cat may have been chased away by a territorial stray cat. If I find a home for the stray what are the chances of my cat coming home? We've been together his whole life minus his early kittenhood. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 lbs
