My dachshund has back pain after sneezing. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 15 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

My 15.5-year-old male dachshund sneezed once very hard this morning and yelped and now seems to be stiff/in moderate pain. He had back surgery to correct a slipped disk 3 years ago, has a mild heart murmur, and arthritis in one of his elbows. He hasn't been experiencing any symptoms prior to his one hard sneeze. He seems to still want to play and isn't in extreme pain, but his back is a bit arched and he's moving a bit slower than usual. Should I take him to the vet or wait a day or two?

Poor pup! I recommend resting Austin for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
