My dog hurt her leg, is panting, not eating. What to do until vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akbash Dog | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My dog hurt her leg last week on a walk. Monday, she fell down our stairs. For the last few days she has had a hard time getting around and it's getting worse. She is drinking water but not eating much. She's also panting alot and sleeping in her injured leg. Still waiting for my vet to give us an appointment. What can I do to help her in the meantime?

It sounds like Ellie is quite painful. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Rest her as much as possible. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. I would give your vet a call to be put on a cancellation list to get you an appointment sooner (have them call if there is a cancellation), or I'd consider taking her into another vet if they can see her sooner. I hope this helps!
