Why does my puppy get upset and chew when left alone in the basement?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 months and 11 days old | 115 lbs

My puppy gets very upset if i put him in the basement to run and play with my other puppy. Even though our basement is huge and has tons of chew toys and food and water. He won’t exercise and play with my other dog and rather would sit at the top of the stairs at the door staring at it. So now he has started even chewing and breaking the stairs where is lays to wait. And it could be only a couple minutes. I exercise him take long hour walks and etc and even play with him! He only does it there

Dogs have been turned (by us) into very social animals who want to be near their people whenever possible. Bear can probably hear you moving around on the other side of the door, and can't understand why he isn't with you. Some of this has to do with early upbringing. If your older puppy was isolated from the beginning, he doesn't miss what he never had (human companionship). If Bear was around people and interacted with them, he wants to continue to do that now. In any case, dogs were not meant to live in cellars. Try to think of some way that they could truly be part of the family by living upstairs in the house with you. This would be your best solution.
