My English Bulldog has a hard skin bump. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered | 11 months and 8 days old | 52 lbs

Hello! Our english bully has a bump on the left side that we noticed last weekend when we picked him up from dog sitting (two other dogs there). The area is round, 2 to 3 cm diameter, hard patch (thickened skin), and the hair is so clumpy we had to shave it (electric razor) to get the pictures. He is trying to lick it but it doesn't hurt when touched. He just finished amoxocillin 2 weeks course for UTI (was still on amoxi when we saw the lesion). Any help for our pooch is much appreciated!!!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This can also be the site of an infection that just was not responsive to the amoxicillin. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
