My dog is chewing his dewclaws after clipping. Is it just irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dutch Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 4 days old | 60 lbs

Today is the first day that my wife clipped my dog's "dewclaws" and he seems to be chewing on his feet/dewclaw. Nothing in his diet has changed and we did not take him anywhere a new allergen could be introduced. He doesn't seem bored, or anxious. I am wondering if it could just be irritation from being clipped? His nails did not bleed when they were clipped, but he did yelp when one was clipped. She clipped all 4 dewclaws and it appears he is only chewing his rear feet.

It certainly could be that his dew claws feel funny and this is why he is chewing on them. Allergies are still a possibility however and a new allergy can develop at any time to things that are already in his food or environment. If he continues to chew on his nails or starts to seem itchy in general I would recommend scheduling an exam with your veterinarian.
