Why does my dog suck and knead blankets like a cat when excited?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 26 lbs

Why does my dog think hes a cat ? Whenever he gets really excited he will grab our blanket or his bed and he sucks on it and kneads it like a cat would ! Is this common in dogs ? He only does it when hes super excited and getting lots of lovings from me and his dad. I've had him for just over a year and he has done this since a month or two after we got him. He had never been around cars until 2 months ago which took an adjustment period as he would chase them, hes fine now. But still kneads !!!

Yes, ive seen this in several dogs. I’ve found that the ones that were separated from their mother at a young age to do this more. Most dogs do grow out of this behavior after they are adults. Giving soft toys for them to cuddle and suck on will prevent some of this behavior on your blankets. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sprocket.
