Why is my senior dog yelping when touched and drooling thickly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 16 lbs

My dog Simon is a 10 year old Boston Terrier/Dachshund mix. I noticed that recently he is yelping when people or my other dog touch him (I touched around his shoulders and he yelped), then just a few minutes ago I saw him sitting under a table with a long string of drool hanging from his jaw. The drool wasn't drippy like normal dog drool, but seemed thick and/or sticky because it stayed in place while I carried him around. He has never drooled before.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. It sounds like he is in discomfort. I recommend that you have Simon evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Simon feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good day!
